Can I brag? I’m gonna brag.
Today, I cleaned a new customer’s carpet while he was not home. He told me what he wanted cleaned and he told me how to get inside his house. And the only reason he trusted me to do this was based solely on my reputation. You see, I’ve cleaned for his sister several times, and she told him what a handsome, caring, giving, skilled, intelligent and especially handsome carpet cleaner I am.
But that’s not even the craziest part. When I got inside, he’d left a Ziploc bag stuffed with cash on the kitchen counter. His instructions were for me to take from the bag whatever he owed for the job. And yes, this is the actual bag…
His bill came to exactly $172. When I was done, I collected the cash, emailed him a receipt and went on my merry way.
What’s astounding about this is the trust involved. I can’t imagine letting a new worker into my home when I’m not there and giving him access to a giant wad of cash… unless his reputation was so sterling, so perfect, so downright stinkin’ EXEMPLARY he was like family.
Which is why I’m bragging today. Trust is a major issue in the carpet cleaning business because, quite frankly, so many professional cleaners are complete yahoos.
In Indiana, there is no required training, license or certification needed to become a carpet cleaner. As a result, this industry attracts plenty of riffraff and sees a lot of turnover.
That poses a major problem because you never truly know who’s going to show up at your home to clean your carpet. It could be some kid with only a few days of experience, a scumbag criminal, or, preferably, a total rockstar like me. Unfortunately, it’s a complete roll of the dice.
